— Why we do not provide daily updates for .fi zone?
— Country-code registars never open their zone files to the public. The only way to discover domains in country-code zones is to do a massive recursive scan of all known websites. That's what we're doing. We use a massive cluster of servers and crawl the Web, then we check and clean the resulting lists. We know of millions of CCTLD-domains in hundreds of zones (and currently know of 218,399 domains in .fi zone), but we do not cover 100% of them (some of the smaller websites simply do not have any inbound links and that means that our crawlers cannot find them). Meanwhile we regularly add new domains to this list (1 time / 2 months).

The .fi domain is an internet country code top level domain for Finland. It was commissioned in 1986 with the intention of serving entities linked to Finland. It is currently managed by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority also known as FICORA.

When the domain was commissioned in 1986, its original applicant was the Finnish Unix Users Group from Tampere. The application to register the top level domain was granted to Tampere University of Technology. It wasn’t until later that the management of the domain was transferred to the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority.

When the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority first took over management of the domain, registration was very strict. They made policy changes in September 2003 that lifted all restrictions of domain registration.

Everyone can register a .FI domain name on a first come, first served basis. The maximum length for a .is domain is 63 characters and the minimum length two characters. Scandinavian letters like ä, å, and ö may be included when registering a .fi domain name.

• The .fi domain was once known I the 1990s as the top level domain of the Penet remailer, a popular server that made it possible for users to send email and messages anonymously.
• In the 1990s, a popular server nic.funet.fi became the largest public file server.
